Whoever the game is aimed at we know it’s not us, or anyone we’ve ever met in real life, but ultimately that’s not our concern. Tonally, Sonic Forces is all over the place, with a story about Eggman ruling over a post-apocalyptic world that takes itself completely seriously and features some surprisingly violent situations. To most people Shadow’s edgelord posturing is the nadir of the entire franchise and yet Sonic Forces not only brings him back but encourages players to create their own try-hard characters as well, like a sort of gamified DeviantArt. Those who take the backstory and characters seriously, and can actually get excited that Shadow the Hedgehog has his own free DLC. But while we assume Sonic Forces’ primary audience is meant to be children, it’s also very clearly aimed at a certain strand of adult Sonic fans.
